Mint
Scientific name: Mentha
Family: Labiates (Lamiaceae)
Native to the Mediterranean region and the Near East, the mint genus includes a wide range of varieties, partly because its species tend to cross easily and form numerous hybrids. Its name comes from Greek mythology: it is said that Hades, the god of the underworld, fell in love with a nymph called Minthe. When his wife, the goddess Persephone, discovered their love affair, Hades transformed Minthe into a fragrant plant to protect her from his spouse’s wrath. The various mint varieties feature a wide aroma spectrum that ranges from tart to balsamic and from pungent and mentholated to fruity-fresh.
